5 Signs You’re Ready For Joint Replacement
July 15, 2025
Joint pain doesn’t just slow you down – it can affect how you move, sleep and live your life.
But how do you know when it’s time to consider joint replacement?
“This procedure can be life-changing when pain limits your daily activities,” says Joel Malin, MD, joint replacement surgeon at the Connecticut Orthopaedic Institute. “It’s not just about age – it’s about how much your joints are holding you back.”
Here are five signs it might be time to take the next step.
1. You’re dealing with constant pain and stiffness.
If pain lingers despite physical therapy, medications or injections, it may be more than a minor issue.
“When pain interferes with your everyday life and doesn’t respond to nonsurgical treatments, it’s time to talk about surgery,” says Dr. Malin.
Here’s what to watch for:
- Pain that lasts more than a few months.
- Discomfort that gets worse with movement.
- Stiffness in the morning or after sitting.
2. Basic movements are becoming harder.
Are you having difficulty walking up or down the stairs? Or bailing on your weekly tennis game?
“Your joint may be too damaged to support you,” explains Dr. Malin. “If you’re changing how you move – limping, leaning or avoiding certain activities – let’s talk.”

3. Your quality of life is taking a hit.
Pain that keeps you from doing what you love – or even just getting through the day – is a red flag.
“Your lifestyle and function matter just as much as what your X-ray shows,” says Dr. Malin. “When joint pain affects your independence and emotional health, it’s time to consider your options.”
4. You’ve tried everything else.
Surgery isn’t the first step – but if rest, therapy, injections and medications aren’t giving you lasting relief, it may be the next option.
“Waiting too long can actually make surgery harder,” explains Dr. Malin. “The longer the joint deteriorates, the more complex the procedure and recovery can become.”

5. You’ve had a full evaluation.
X-rays and MRIs help, but they don’t always tell the whole story.
“A full picture includes your pain, mobility, lifestyle and goals,” says Dr. Malin. “We look at all of that to decide whether surgery is the right direction.”
Identifying these signs helps determine when joint replacement is right for you.

When to talk to a doctor.
If joint pain is affecting your sleep, mobility or independence, don’t wait to get help.
Joint replacement can restore movement, improve balance and make daily tasks feel manageable again. And with today’s surgical techniques, many people recover quickly.
“The goal of joint replacement isn’t just to stop the pain,” says Dr. Malin. “It’s to help you move better – and get back to the activities you enjoy most.”
