Bio

I am the Director of Neurocritical Care [NCC] Service and Program at Hartford Hospital. I am an Affiliated Clinical Faculty Member of the University of Connecticut, School of Medicine. My objective is to continue helping in our interdisciplinary team integration and in creating the avenues for interdisciplinary participation in patient care, guideline development, quality, safety, education and research. I am very interested in developing innovative solutions and newer technology implementation.

Throughout my career, I have had significant leadership experience. In 2001, I had my first experience leading a NCC Unit at the Drexel Medical School-Philadelphia. More recently, I had the opportunity of developing a NCC Unit and Program from the ground up at the University of Texas Medical Center –San Antonio [UTHSCSA]. By the end of my tenure at UTHSCSA, I counted with a fully staffed 18-bed NCC Unit with top-of-the-line technology (portable CT, MRI in the same floor, robotic telemedicine, CNS multimodal monitoring), and a specialized interdisciplinary team (NCC trained medical faculty, clinical pharmacist, fellows, residents and students, nurse practitioners, and dedicated specialized nursing staff). Further, this unit was praised as one of the best specialized ICUs at UTHSCSA. During my career, I have received several awards for excellence and commitment to my profession and academic mission.

I have clinical training in adult neurology, internal medicine and NCC and stroke. Further, I have research training in epidemiology and bio-statistics. I have research interest in the critically ill neurosurgical and neurological patients. My other professional interests are clinical outcomes and quality. I have participated as P.I. and Co-PI in clinical and basic research. I have been invited to lecture and present posters at national and international scientific meetings. I have published at renowned peer-reviewed scientific journals and neurology specialized books. I have been a research grant scientific reviewer for several of the AHA Basic Science Grant Committees and the Qatar National Research Fund.

I was born in Bogota-Colombia, but I became US Citizen in December 9th 2011.
