Bloodless Center

In 1996, Hartford Hospital became the first hospital in Connecticut to implement bloodless medicine and surgery techniques.

Hartford Hospital has adopted the most effective and aggressive techniques to reduce the need for blood replacement in all our patients and meet the needs of the community we serve. These include all patients with religious and personal beliefs regarding blood transfusions. Furthermore, published clinical evidence demonstrates that bloodless methods cause lower surgical morbidity and mortality.

The Program

Dr. Randy Edwards, Director of the Bloodless Medicine Center, with the support of the Surgical Outpatient Staff in the Medical Office Building located at 85 Seymour Street, Suite 601, sees patients for consultation on Friday mornings.

As an aspect of patient blood management, the goals are:

• Listen to patient needs, desires and concerns regarding blood transfusions.
• Explore treatment possibilities and provide patient with correct and current information about all patient blood management interventions.
• Inform patients of risks, benefits and alternatives of treatment choices.
• Integrate patient values and autonomy in decision making, decide together on a course of action and tailor a plan of care which incorporates patient’s choice.
• Document and communicate patient’s preferences.
