Pet Therapy

There's nothing like a warm puppy to boost anyone's spirits! That fact is fairly well accepted everywhere, even in the medical field. At Hartford Hospital, our Pet Therapy Program currently has several dogs participating in the program. The goal of the program is to reduce the patients' stress of hospitalization. We have found that the canine volunteers bring joy to patients and staff alike.

Prior to becoming a volunteer, each dog fulfills all Hartford Hospital requirements, including extensive veterinarian medical and behavioral protocols. The Pet Therapy dogs wear blue bandanas and an official hospital identification badge for easy recognition.

Pet Therapy dogs, accompanied by their owners and trained facilitators are scheduled to visit patients every Tuesday and Wednesday, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. However, special requests for visits can be made through the Department of Volunteer Services, 860.972.2198. If you have a personal pet that would like to visit you during your stay, please ask your nurse and speak to the Nurse Manager on your floor to see if any special arrangements can be made.
