Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program

Pediatric Kidney Transplantation

Hartford Hospital and Connecticut Children’s are proud to offer one of the leading pediatric kidney transplant programs in the country.

Our providers have successfully transplanted pediatric patients since the late 1990's and have some of the best clinical outcomes across the nation.

When you choose our program for your child’s care, you’ll get the support of an entire team, all specially trained in developmentally-appropriate pediatric care. This includes an expert team of pediatric nephrologists, pediatric transplant surgeons, pediatric nutritionists, social workers, and financial counselors. Should the need arise, you’ll also have convenient and easy access to a range of pediatric sub-specialists who are physically located right on our campus.

Structural and congenital abnormalities and kidney diseases are the two main reasons a pediatric patient may require a transplant. We understand the unique needs of our patients and have experience transplanting toddlers through young adults.

Often times, children and adolescents will require dialysis to bridge their journey to kidney transplant. Connecticut Children’s is currently building the first pediatric dialysis center in the state of Connecticut, expected to open in 2019. Designed with the needs of this special population in mind, it will provide care in a child/adolescent friendly environment by pediatric experts committed to providing high quality care for the patient and families we serve. The services will include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and therapeutic apheresis under the highest standards of care of our specialized pediatric team.

The Transplant Process

If a kidney transplant is determined to be the best option for your child, we will guide you every step of the way. The Hartford Hospital Transplant Program partners closely with Connecticut Children’s. Transplant surgeries are performed at Hartford Hospital, with all pre- and post-transplant care provided at Connecticut Children’s.

During the evaluation process, we work with both deceased and living donor programs to identify a possible match. Every donor and recipient is paired with a dedicated nurse care coordinator who will work directly with you and coordinate all care for your child. We work hard to keep children close to home with their support networks during the transplant process.

Our goal is simple: to give you the highest level of clinical excellence found only at the largest centers, but also provide the personalized, one-on-one care that makes you feel like you’re the only family we are working with.
