The Program
Comprehensive Breast Cancer Treatment
Connecticut has the second highest breast cancer rate in the nation. Our Breast Cancer Program offers the best breast cancer treatments available nationwide and access to the very latest in breast cancer research – all within a supportive community hospital setting. With one call to Cancer Connect, a breast cancer navigator guides patients through diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. They do everything from helping patients understand abnormal findings on screening tests to booking appointments they need for evaluation. Our team is advancing the clinical research trials and technologies to eliminate breast cancer everywhere, starting with the best care for every individual breast cancer patient.
Our Multidisciplinary Team Approach
Patients get every resource and specialist they need from a multidisciplinary team of breast cancer experts. Patients and their families are considered part of the team, which includes primary care and OB GYN physicians, breast surgeons and oncologic surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, radiologists and radiation oncologists, pathologists, and medical oncologists. An even broader group of experienced cancer specialists at the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center Tumor Board consults on particularly difficult cases.
Supports for Breast Cancer Patients
Healing breast cancer means treating the body while caring for mind and spirit – for patients and their families. Our breast cancer program combines state-of-the-art imaging and surgical technologies with integrative therapies like Reiki, acupuncture, physical therapy and therapeutic massage. They ease side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, help treat post-surgical lymphedema and support a feeling of overall wellness.
Community Outreach for Breast Cancer Prevention
Ultimately, eliminating breast cancer means caring for the entire community through breast cancer prevention and early detection programs. Hartford Hospital’s active outreach programs educate the community about maintaining breast health with self-exams, when to schedule mammograms and how to assess personal risks for breast cancer. A new Mobile Mammography Program is bringing state of the art digital screening for breast cancer to Hartford area communities. Grant funds and charitable donations help support the cost of mammograms for those in need of assistance.
Staying Well After Breast Cancer Treatment
Breast cancer survivors have particular concerns about ongoing wellness issues like managing lymphedema. With help from the LIVESTRONG foundation we developed a survivorship program to care for patients beyond their cancer treatment. Patients stay connected to supportive care with a comprehensive summary of their medical records, surveillance program recommendations and detailed wellness care plans. This increases peace of mind and supports physical and emotional health during breast cancer survivorship.
