The Department of Radiation Oncology is staffed by board-certified radiation oncologists who work collaboratively with other members of the oncology team to prospectively plan and treat patients with cancer.
The Department has a long track record of leadership in technology and innovation, including participation in development of CT based simulation and treatment planning. Current areas of innovative expertise include stereotactic conformal radiation therapy, stereotactic brachytherapy, 3-D conformal radiation therapy in the treatment of prostate cancer and other neoplasms, interstitial and intracavitary brachytherapy, intensity modulation based conformal radiation therapy, and concomitant chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Members of the Department's medical staff also work collaboratively with the other staff of the Department, including radiation oncology nurses, medical physicists, dosimetrists, engineers, data managers, and clerical staff to provide a state-of-the-art product. The Department has been selected by one of the leading accelerator manufacturers as its Northeast U.S. Center of Excellence in recognition of the Department's excellence and innovation.
Collaboration also occurs with other interdisciplinary oncology team members to focus on patient needs. These members include social workers, chaplains, nutritionists, nurses, and others as needed. During the radiation experience, the patient and family might also be assisted by one of many available support groups. Our goal is to deliver cutting edge radiation treatment, integrated with other cancer care providers and in collaboration with the patient's primary care physician, and meeting whatever needs the patient during this experience.
Members of the Department staff also provide Radiation Oncology services at John Dempsey Hospital and the new Community Care Cancer Center in Enfield, CT, and Manchester, CT.
