The Department of Surgery's aggregate surgical workload accounts for nearly half the total number of operative procedures performed in the institution.
The spectrum of services is distributed in the Department’s various Divisions/Sections: Bariatric Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Critical Care, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Podiatric Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Trauma and Pediatric Surgery (the latter provided at Connecticut Children’s adjacent to Hartford Hospital.)
The delivery of the highest attainable quality of surgical care is the primary mission of the Department. The ongoing monitoring of that care and the efforts to continuously improve it are carried out in collaboration with a strong surgical nursing department, with other expert caregivers, and with medical information systems of the institution in support of patient care. In response to patient need, the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery (CBMS) has been established to accommodate those individuals who, guided by religious constraints, will not permit blood or blood products as elements of their treatment.
The education of medical students and the training of surgery residents as future general and sub-specialty surgical practitioners is an integral part of the Department’s mission. The education of medical students, surgical residents, attending physician staff, advanced practitioners and nurses is augmented by the utilization of the Hartford Hospital Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation (CESI), which provides cutting edge technology and simulation education.
The blended synergy of patient focus and education is the hallmark of the Department.
Quality Focus
Hartford Hospital is committed to providing clinical quality second to none. Led by Dr. Jonathan Gates, Director of the Department of Surgery, the surgical quality and safety program at Hartford Hospital participates in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS/NSQIP) and the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP). Through these resources, Dr. Gates and his quality team identify areas needing improvement and assist in designing strategies to tackle any shortfalls. It means we all win, and no one more than our patients. Better quality improves patient outcomes, prevents complications, reduces costs, and saves lives.
