The Hartford Hospital Fellowship in Medical Simulation was established in 2011. It is a one or two year fellowship open to graduates of accredited Emergency Medicine Residencies.
The goal of the fellowship is to provide the participant with advanced training in medical simulation, curriculum development and implementation, simulation research, and teaching. This program will prepare the participant for a leadership position in medical education and for a medical simulation directorship position.
Faculty
The faculty consists of recognized leaders in medical simulation as well as the academic faculty at the University of Connecticut Emergency Medicine Residency. The fellow will work directly under Dr. Thomas Nowicki, Medical Director for the Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation (CESI) at Hartford Hospital.
Requirements
Simulation Fellows at Hartford Hospital are required to have completed a residency in Emergency Medicine and be eligible to work as an Attending Physician in the Hartford Hospital Emergency Department.
Curriculum
Educational Activities
This fellowship is a one or two-year appointment. Time is spent at CESI (Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation) at Hartford Hospital. Simulation Medicine was first implemented at Hartford Hospital in 1999 and has grown from a small hospital based resource to an international training center. CESI is now a 45,000 square foot state of the art Simulation Center that serves a broad range of learners.
Simulation fellows will actively participate and help support many disciplines developing curricula, running simulations, and teaching in a variety of simulation center activities. This fellowship will allow the participant to actively develop their own teaching skills and explore their area of interest in resident and general medical education. The fellow works closely with the residents of the University of Connecticut Emergency Medicine Residency which is based at Hartford Hospital. They are expected to help educate these residents in their bi-weekly simulation sessions. Participation in at least one simulation based academic conference is expected during the fellowship.
Fellows will gain administrative and leadership skills and experience by participating in the operations of large scale simulation training center. An opportunity also exists to pursue a Graduate Certificate or Master’s Degree in Education.
Clinical Activities
The fellow will act as an attending emergency physician in Hartford Hospital’s Emergency Department. Hartford Hospital is the region’s Level 1 trauma center with an active aeromedical program and the state's highest patient volume emergency department (approx. 110,000 patient visits/year.) This fellow will teach and participate in the education of residents at this academic emergency department.
Research Activities
The fellow will have the freedom to identify an area of interest in medical simulation and implement research projects during their fellowship. Faculty will work closely with the fellow to develop these research projects. It is expected the fellow will have a publishable manuscript by the completion of their appointment.
