Letter from the Program Director:
Thank you for your interest in the Hartford Hospital Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program. Our residency program has been in place for over 65 years and currently trains 5 residents per year. Graduates from our program have gone on to successful careers in a variety of both private practice and academic settings, including some who have subsequently served as department chiefs, residency program directors, and hospital presidents.
Founded in 1854 and located in Connecticut’s capital city, Hartford Hospital is an 867 bed tertiary care hospital and regional referral center which draws patients from most of Connecticut and southwestern Massachusetts. The hospital is a level 1 trauma center which has one of the busiest emergency departments in New England (over 100,000 emergency department visits/year), covers all surgical subspecialties (including one of the largest volumes of robotic surgeries in New England), and has been nationally recognized as a Stroke Center, Women’s Health Center of Excellence, Prostate Cancer Center of Excellence, and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. Additionally, our residents rotate at the Bone and Joint Institute (Connecticut’s first dedicated orthopedic hospital) and the 187-bed Connecticut Children’s which has been ranked by US News and World Report as one of the best children’s hospitals in the nation; both of these sites are conveniently located on our campus.
I believe the environment we have here is ideal for training the next generation of radiologists for these reasons:
-
The breadth of pathology and volume of cases provide our residents with exceptional real-world training, from which they develop the diagnostic skills to thrive in residency and beyond.
-
Our subspecialized attending radiologists have trained at some of the most prestigious fellowship programs in the country and range from some who have been practicing for decades to those who are recent fellowship graduates. Our residents benefit not only from their teaching, but also from the professional connections they provide when it comes time to seek fellowships.
-
By choice, we have limited radiology fellowship programs in the hospital. This allows our senior residents fellowship-level opportunities and hands-on experiences with a wide range of interesting and complex cases. They routinely act as consultants to referring clinicians, participate in radiology-rich interdepartmental tumor boards and conferences, and educate junior residents and medical students.
One of the more intriguing aspects of our program is that while the residency is administered by Hartford Hospital, it is staffed by radiologists from Jefferson Radiology, a Radiology Partners practice which serves all 50 states, connecting over 3,900 radiologists. Jefferson Radiology is the largest private practice group in New England (28th largest group in the nation) and provides a full complement of subspecialty trained radiologists. In addition to staffing Hartford Hospital, the group staffs several smaller community hospitals and multiple outpatient offices. While the majority of our residents’ time is spent at Hartford Hospital, they can spend some time in the Jefferson Radiology offices to be involved in patient encounters in the outpatient setting. Because of the interconnectedness of our PACS systems, during conferences our residents are also exposed to the interesting cases performed at the outlying hospitals and outpatient offices.
Our residents have ample opportunities for teaching and research. Hartford Hospital is a primary affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, and we often have rotating medical students and non-radiology clinical residents on month-long clerkships in the department. Research is actively supported with mentoring, statistical assistance, study design development, and rolling grants.
I can assure you that the more you learn about our program, the more you will be impressed. There is a reason why our attendings have trained at the country’s most competitive programs and have chosen to practice here, and there is a reason why our graduating residents have gone on to the most prestigious fellowships in the country. If you join us, you will leave here as an extremely capable radiologist, ready to face whatever the changing landscape of radiology has in store.
Sincerely,
Lindsay Griffin, MD
