About the Program
The PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program is based primarily at Hartford Hospital with time spent at the University of St. Joseph School of Pharmacy and Physician Assistant Studies, and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. In addition to an intensive emergency medicine curriculum, residents will gain experience in toxicology, pediatric medicine, intensive care, pre-hospital care, and emergency preparedness. The residency has a strong academia focus with significant exposure to didactic and clinical experiential education at the University of Saint Joseph School of Pharmacy and Physician Assistant Studies. The resident will also complete a research project, create and present an ACPE accredited continuing education program, and lead quarterly journal club discussions. The resident will have the opportunity to complete a number of elective experiences in infectious diseases, intensive care units, pain management, as well as community emergency medicine at a surrounding Hartford Healthcare facility.
Residency Program Purpose
PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Post PGY2 Plans: I plan to apply to jobs in emergency medicine in the Northeast so I can stay close to home. I look forward to utilizing what I have learned over the past two years as an independent pharmacist in an emergency department. From my residency, I have discovered a passion for education and hope to have the opportunity to precept students and residents, as well as to one day transition into a faculty role at a local university.
What attracted you to Hartford Hospital? As an APPE student, I completed a longitudinal rotation at Hartford Hospital, where I was impressed by the institution’s offerings and the dedication of the preceptors. During my PGY1 year at Hartford Hospital, I completed an emergency medicine rotation, which allowed me to experience the emergency department before applying to the program. I immediately knew that I wanted to pursue my PGY2 here. I was exposed to a diverse patient population, which enabled me to explore various topics on a daily basis. As a Level 1 trauma center that can see over 200 patients at any given moment, there is something new to learn every day. Additionally, the program is very well-rounded, offering opportunities to complete 2-3 ICU rotations, a longitudinal pre-hospital care rotation with ground EMS and Lifestar, help grade assignments and teach lectures at the University of Saint Joseph’s School of Pharmacy, and gain independence through the staffing requirement. Having been in the program for a couple of months now, I appreciate the professional growth it has allowed me to achieve thus far. The high patient census has helped me build proficiency, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Moreover, the people you meet and work with along the way are an additional benefit of completing a PGY2 residency here.
What do you do in your free time? Work-life balance is important as a resident, and it is really nice having preceptors and an RPD who feels the same way. I try to make time to have dinner with friends and family, play tennis in the warmer months, take weekend trips, and recently I joined a volleyball league with other pharmacists from Hartford Hospital. There is always something to do in Connecticut.
What do you love most about Connecticut?
I love that you can experience all the different seasons with many activities to do! My favorite season in Connecticut is fall. Every weekend, you can find a different fair or festival going on, make a trip to one of the many hiking trails that has beautiful scenery, or even go to a corn maze with the other pharmacy residents at Hartford Hospital.
